Measuring Connectivity of Pedestrian Street Networks in the Built Environment for Walking: A Space-Syntax Approach

Network connectivity is an important aspect of the built environment. However, it rarely captures attention decision-makers while implementing pedestrian projects. In recent years, Space-Syntax (SS) analysis gaining popularity among researchers due to its ability clearly demonstrate topological configuration a physical network. This research carries out 297 links across three networks in Varanasi, India, thereby exploring relationship between volume, SS indices Indian context, and other environment features, such as presence sidewalk, right-of-way (ROW) landuse area. Data collection includes developing GIS database network, 30-min volume counts at various locations, calculating measures from networks. Resulting were analyzed with existing volumes through correlation, stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR), path models. Results showed that index ‘Normalized Angular Integration (NAIN)’ be highly correlated (r = 0.57). Subsequently, MLR models show statistically significant NAIN, ROW, commercial ROW affects both directly indirectly area, indicating requirement for improving/providing walking facilities areas. The study concludes practical implications local authorities highlight importance providing infrastructures streets having high connectivity. also shows significance NAIN effective measure street network
